Water management is one of the biggest challenges of a PEM fuel cell system. Maintaining sufficient water content of the polymer electrolyte membrane is vital for efficient operation and also extending the lifecyle of the fuel cell. Humidification of the cathode side is one way of maintaining this membrane water content.
The KNIPPING Humidifier is a passive humidifier meaning it does not add to the parasitic loses of the fuel cell system. It uses the water created in the fuel cell stack by the electro-chemical reaction that occurs. This water then exits the fuel cell in vapor and/or droplet form with the exhaust air. It is then led into the humidifier along with the dry inlet air where the two air streams are separated with a state-of-the-art polymer membrane. This membrane allows transfer of water due to the gradient but does not allow any oxygen or nitrogen to transfer.

The KNIPPING Humidifier consists of polymer distribution plates which are separated by a polymer membrane and seal. These plates are then stacked according to the required water transfer and pressure loss.
