The design of our plastic parts is no accident. Shape, material, and functionality are, among other factors, the result of the work of Technical Product Designers (m/f/d).

Technical Product Designers specializing in product design and construction are experts in designing and developing products as well as creating technical drawings. This includes selecting materials, manufacturing methods, and assembly techniques while considering technical, design, and economic aspects.

As a Technical Product Designer at Knipping, you will learn during your apprenticeship how to create drawings and 3D representations for the development of thermoplastic components and assemblies, following technical, design, or customer-specific requirements. You will also optimize existing components or develop new ones.

Visual representations are made using 3D CAD software, meaning computer-aided drawing. Additionally, you will create technical documentation of your work and provide CAD support to the development department. You will also be involved in the data preparation for our costing department during the inquiry process.

Training Duration: 3.5 years
Vocational School: Christian-Schmidt-Schule in Neckarsulm

In September 2016, I started my apprenticeship as a Technical Product Designer specializing in Product Design at KNIPPING Kunststofftechnik. I am currently in my 3rd year of training.
I decided to pursue my apprenticeship at KNIPPING after being impressed by the positive insights and the company culture during the 2015 training day.

At the beginning of my 3.5-year apprenticeship, I was warmly welcomed into the company. After being trained in development, I was quickly integrated into the daily routine. My responsibilities include creating drawings, designing test fixtures, and conducting experiments in the lab.

The apprenticeship at KNIPPING is very varied. We trainees are always offered something exciting: whether it’s an introductory weekend or different outings like go-karting, football tournaments, and self-defense courses. There is also the opportunity to be trained as an apprenticeship ambassador and introduce the apprenticeship profession to students at schools.

Trainee projects like the social project “Bus Stop” are especially inspiring to me, as everything was developed independently, presenting new challenges.

When I started my apprenticeship in August 2015, I was overwhelmed with many questions, and my excitement grew. At the beginning of the training, I wondered how I would remember everything, where I would put all these impressions, and whether I would even need all this knowledge. These thoughts were quickly dismissed after I went through various technical departments.

From tool maintenance to toolmaking, from manufacturing to assembly, into quality control, and finally, into cost estimation. Suddenly, I began to recognize the first process chains, structures, and workflows. My interest grew, and my colleagues answered every one of my questions and were always friendly and helpful.

Next came the “Basic Metal Training,” where I learned about the material steel, its properties, and how it can be processed. This knowledge helps me in the construction of small series fixtures for welding containers, supports for measurement rooms, and the evaluation of injection molds. The knowledge gained also proved useful in vocational school, which is conducted in blocks, as we discuss all manufacturing processes and materials. Block-based vocational school is very convenient because it allows you to fully focus on your studies without the distraction of the apprenticeship company. It also gives you time to work on projects in a realistic way since you can continue working on them the next day.

In conclusion, I can say that working at KNIPPING is a lot of fun, and the apprenticeship as a Technical Product Designer is very exciting because the range of tasks is large and varied, and the colleagues are friendly and helpful.
